- Accepting Corporate Gifts

Is it alright for your employees to receive gifts from your corporate clients or suppliers? And if they do, how does HR police this?

The following are some practices from the discussions in our HR forum:

  • The types of gifts vary from cash to non-cash items such as calendars, diaries and umbrellas.


  • Gift items such as hampers or higher value gifts must be declared. Some are donated.


  • Some companies here use gift declaration forms for receiving or giving gifts.


  • Organisations also exercise their prerogative when it is an expensive gift. If accepted, these are handed to HR.
  • The receiving of corporate gifts can become an issue or concern when it biases judgments and influences decision-making or favors one supplier against another. In serious cases, the fear is on the breaking of confidentiality or leaking of confidential company information.

    Many companies have written policies to help prevent the above occurrences or provide guidelines or code of ethics on business conduct to manage this aspect of corporate behaviour.
